Basel liegt umgeben von den Regionen Markgräflerland, Elsass und Baselland, die reich an landwirtschaftlichen Erzeugnissen sind. Ausserdem leben in Kleinbasel Menschen unterschiedlichster Herkunft die ihre Traditionen und Essgewohnheiten mitbringen.
Idee des Matthäusmarktes ist es, im Quartier ein attraktive Einkaufsmöglichkeit zu schaffen, die saisongerecht und erntefrisch landwirtschaftliche Erzeugnisse in die Stadt bringt. Der Matthäusmarkt will ein echter Produzenten/innenmarkt sein, 80% der Produkte müssen daher aus dem eigenen Anbau oder der eigenen Produktion kommen.
Ermöglicht wurde die Realisierung des Markts auch Dank eines Förderbeitrags der Christoph Merian Stiftung und der ideellen Unterstützung von der Stadt Basel.
Basel is surrounded by the regions of Markgräflerland, Alsace, Jura and Baselland, all rich in agricultural products. In addition, we know that there are people of many different nationalities in Kleinbasel, all of whom bring their own traditions and different food specialities
The idea of a market on Matthäusplatz is to try to make this wealth of products visible through a Saturday morning market. We hope that this will benefit the people living in Kleinbasel, who will be able to buy both locally grown, fresh fruit and vegetables but also products and food from around the world. It should also provide an additional source of income for the farmers and other food producers of the region.
The markets in Lörrach and St. Louis inspired us to start up our own market in Kleinbasel. The producers from Alsace, who up to a few years ago would sell their produce in the streets of Kleinbasel, are becoming fewer and fewer.
We hope therefore that this market will meet a real need for the inhabitants of the area.
